Everyone has heard it, if not asked it themselves. "What is the best version of Linux for a beginner". Well in the past there was hundreds of answers but as Linux has matured as a technology and all of the commercial companies have been scampering trying to differentiate themselves from each other. It seems a new leader has emerged. Kubuntu(KDE) and Ubuntu(Gnome) Mark Shuttleworth, the first African citizen in space has funded the development of theses two projects with 10 million dollars of seed money. This my friends, is Linux done right, it follows one major principle which most distro's do poorly. Keeping It Simple, everything most people need is already installed and there is virtually no rocket science required to get Linux up and running. |

I have been working more and more with Debian and while i started out years ago on debian and then went and played with everything else i find myself amazed by how sweet debian can be when you have the basics down. Debian is a very network dependant OS and that swords cuts both ways but the power of it is awe inspiring when wielded properly. The fun part is finding sources for programs not provided in debian main. The best starting point is usually http://www.apt-get.org. One of the issues here though is GPG keys. Someone else is packaging these programs up and signing or not signing them and your going to install them. Check out the source, most people working with debian are quite visible and if they are unsigned i tend to be weary. If they pass the test though and hopefully are signing their packages you can import their key easily enough. |

For about the last 9 months I have been wanting to build a Car-PC. 4 months ago TR hooked me up with a EPIA M10000 Mini-ITX motherboard and its been staring at me for way to long now.
Finally, I can't take it anymore, after comparing all of the cool hardware out there i have pulled out the credit card and started picking up the hardware for this project, i expect it to take me 3 months to build/order/pay/install. My major reason for wanting this is purely business related. I work as a Computer Consultant and live or die depending on my ability to access my customer database. Anytime i need a number or any info, its seconds away as long as i am online. When i am on the road, late to a service call or just need a map to the clients site, i need internet access to get to it. All i am wanting to do is have my LAMP apps available, sync the databases everytime the car associates with my AP. |
